Following Your North Node: Releasing Fear and Embracing Love

The strongest emotion I’ve encountered on the journey of following my true purpose is fear. The path of the North Node is not meant to be easy. In fact, it represents the fear of the unknown, a path that feels unfamiliar, uncomfortable, and often even impossible to reach. Yet, deep down, we know it’s exactly what we need to fulfill our soul’s purpose.

On the other hand, the South Node represents the aspects of life we are most familiar with. It’s the place where we’ve been before, and although it might feel safe, it also keeps us stuck in old patterns and habits.

It's the zone where we might fall into the illusion of security, but we know, deep down, that it’s not where we can grow. Our South Node often reflects behaviors and choices that keep us in a loop, and even though they feel comfortable, they no longer serve us.

Steven Forrest, a pioneer of Evolutionary Astrology, wrote in Yesterday’s Sky that everything in our natal charts is karmic, and that karma is essentially the repetition of unresolved behaviors from past lives. This is where the North & South Node come in.

Your North and South Nodes, along with their rulers and aspects, tell the tale of the karmic lessons your soul is here to resolve. This story isn't set in stone, it’s a tool to uncover the patterns we’ve carried with us and identify what’s keeping us stuck.

The intention is to lean into the lessons of your North Node, the point of growth and fulfillment in this lifetime, while also integrating the energy of your South Node in a healthier, more balanced way.

Growth is inevitable, and the more we confront the fear that comes with stepping into the unknown, the more we move closer to the happiness and fulfillment that await us.

How to Work With Fear

One of the best ways to work with fear is to transmute it into love. I know that may sound simple, but it’s about recognizing that fear and love share the same underlying desires.

Fear is often triggered when something important to us—such as connection, caring, or contribution—is at stake. These are the same core values that are present in love.

According to Russ Harris, MD, author of The Happiness Trap, when we recognize that both fear and love are seeking connection, care, and contribution, we can shift our mindset and bring balance to these emotions.

Fear doesn’t want to paralyze us, it wants to protect us, just as love wants to connect us. By recognizing the common ground between the two, we can show compassion to our fear, sit with it, and allow it to be felt and released.

The truth is, fear and love want the same thing. They just go about it in different ways. When we allow ourselves to sit with fear and process it, its intensity lessens. This creates space for more love, for more confidence, and for more of the courage we need to take aligned action.

There will always be some fear, it’s a natural part of life. In healthy doses, it motivates us, keeps us safe, and helps us act when it really matters. The issue arises when fear is irrational or out of balance, holding us back from doing what we truly desire.

If fear has been keeping you stuck, it’s time to confront it. By recognizing the source of your fear and learning to work with it, you can begin to reclaim your North Node and align with your soul’s purpose.

When you take the courageous step to move beyond fear, you’ll create space for more love, clarity, and alignment in your life, allowing you to pursue what matters most with confidence.
